Elon Musk’s satellite internet venture, Starlink, faced another major disruption on Monday, leaving nearly 50,000 users across the United States and some in Colombia without connectivity. The outage comes after several disruptions in recent months, highlighting the challenges of managing a complex satellite internet network that promises high-speed coverage around the globe.
According to outage-tracking platforms, 59% of affected users reported internet slowdowns, 40% faced complete outages, and 1% experienced intermittent connections. The hardest-hit areas in the US included Virginia, Louisiana, Indiana, and Washington, while international users, particularly in Colombia, also reported service interruptions.
Starlink’s network relies on a constellation of more than 6,750 low-earth orbit satellites. These satellites communicate with ground stations and end-user terminals, allowing connectivity in regions where conventional broadband is limited or unavailable. The outages illustrate a critical vulnerability: while satellite internet is revolutionary, it is still subject to technical disruptions that can ripple across continents.
Users quickly took to social media to share frustrations, with complaints emphasizing that such disruptions are increasingly frequent. Musk has previously acknowledged outages, apologizing for disruptions on his social media platform X and promising measures to minimize recurrence. Starlink’s entry into India, planned by the end of 2025, adds another layer of complexity. The company has received clearances, trial bandwidth allocation, and identified 17 ground station locations across India to connect its satellites with local networks. Experts say that while Starlink promises to transform internet access in remote regions, consistent service reliability will be critical for public trust, especially given India’s diverse geography and extreme weather conditions.
