Stalin calls DMK manifesto ‘Superstar’, targets AIADMK amid welfare push

M. K. Stalin on Sunday described the DMK’s election manifesto as the “superstar of the 2026 Assembly polls,” asserting that while promises can be made by any party, only those backed by credibility earn public trust . Addressing a massive rally of the Secular Progressive Alliance, the DMK president underscored that his party’s commitments are rooted in its governance record and welfare delivery.

Launching a sharp attack on Edappadi K. Palaniswami , Stalin accused the AIADMK leader of running a campaign based on “slander and low-level talk,” and went on to label him a “liar” and the “image of betrayal.” He alleged that the opposition’s criticism stems from its inability to counter the DMK’s governance model and welfare achievements.

The DMK manifesto, which Stalin repeatedly referred to as a “people-centric charter,” places strong emphasis on social welfare expansion and women-centric schemes . Among its headline promises is the enhancement of the Maghalir Urimai Thogai to ₹2,000 per month , aimed at strengthening financial support for women heads of households. Another key proposal is the Illatharasi scheme , under which ₹8,000 worth of coupons will be provided to homemakers for purchasing essential household appliances.

The manifesto also reiterates the party’s commitment to its “Dravidian Model” of governance , focusing on inclusive growth, social justice, and targeted welfare delivery. Stalin claimed that the model has already demonstrated tangible benefits, which, he said, has unsettled political opponents.

However, the manifesto has drawn criticism from opposition parties , particularly the AIADMK, which has questioned the financial feasibility and sustainability of the proposed schemes. Critics argue that expanding cash transfers and subsidies could strain the state’s finances if not backed by robust revenue generation measures. Some have also termed the promises as populist measures aimed at electoral gains , rather than long-term structural reforms.

Despite the criticism, Stalin maintained that the DMK’s assurances are practical and implementable , citing the party’s track record of fulfilling key promises in the past. The Tamil Nadu Assembly elections , scheduled for April 23 , are expected to witness a keen contest, with welfare-driven narratives and governance claims taking centre stage in the campaign.
