Chief Minister Revanth Reddy announced that the Sri Rama Sagar Project ( SRSP) Stage-2 project will be named after the late senior Congress leader Ramreddy Damodar Reddy. The declaration came during a memorial event held in Tungaturti to honor the former minister.

Speaking at the gathering, CM Revanth remembered the services of Ramreddy Damodar Reddy, describing him as a selfless leader who dedicated his personal assets for the welfare of the party and its workers. “His death was deeply saddening. He served as an MLA and minister five times, contributing thousands of acres of ancestral land from Khammam and Nalgonda districts for public use. He tirelessly fought to bring Godavari waters to fluoride-affected areas in Nalgonda. Through his relentless efforts, the SRS Stage-2 project was initiated, bringing much-needed irrigation to the region. Naming the SRS Stage-2 after him is a true tribute to his legacy,” the CM said.

About Ramreddy Damodar Reddy

Ramreddy Damodar Reddy was a senior Telangana Congress leader and former minister in the undivided Andhra Pradesh government. He passed away recently in Hyderabad after receiving treatment at AIG Hospital for kidney-related health issues.

Born on September 14, 1952, in Patalingala village of Khammam district, he entered politics from the Tungaturti constituency, winning his first MLA election in 1985. He subsequently won in 1989, 1994, 2004, and 2009, contesting as an independent in 1994 when denied a Congress ticket. He also served as a minister in the YS Rajasekhar Reddy cabinet between 2004 and 2009.

Role in SRSP stage-2 project

The CM’s announcement has sparked discussions about Reddy’s role in the SRSP Stage-2 project. While there is no clear evidence of his direct involvement in the approvals or construction stages, it is believed that he had informally advocated for the project during his political tenure. The SRSP Stage-2 project, part of the Kakatiya Canal from 284 km to 346 km, provides irrigation facilities to over 1.78 lakh hectares and was initially sanctioned in 2006 at an estimated cost of ₹1,043.14 crore.

Naming infrastructure projects after political leaders has been a common practice, and CM Revanth’s decision reflects this tradition, honoring Reddy’s contributions to the region.
