Srisailam Project Wins International Recognition for Water, Power Contributions
The Srisailam project has earned a place in the London-based World Book of Records, becoming the first Indian project of its kind to receive the recognition, according to reports. The honour acknowledges the dam’s engineering design, structural strength and hydropower generation capabilities. Welcoming the achievement, Andhra Pradesh Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar described it as a moment of pride for people in both Telugu states, highlighting the reservoir’s decades-long contribution to electricity generation, irrigation and drinking water supply.
The minister said the Srisailam reservoir had withstood major floods over several decades while continuing to serve the public. He emphasised that the project was much more than a power generation facility, as it supplied drinking water to millions of people and supported irrigation across lakhs of acres.
Built across the Krishna River, the Srisailam project plays a crucial role in managing water resources and supporting agriculture, electricity generation and drinking water supply. Its contribution to the development of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana has made it a significant part of the region’s infrastructure, Ravi Kumar said.
Highlighting the importance of water management, the minister said the Pattiseema project, implemented under the leadership of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, had created greater opportunities to utilise Srisailam waters to meet the needs of Rayalaseema.
Through Pattiseema, approximately 500 TMC of water had been supplied to the Krishna Delta so far, according to the minister. This had helped meet the irrigation requirements of delta farmers while providing greater flexibility to use Srisailam reservoir water for agricultural and drinking water needs in Rayalaseema.
Ravi Kumar said the arrangement demonstrated the importance of coordinating water resources to address the requirements of different regions. By facilitating the supply of water to the Krishna Delta through Pattiseema, the state could use available Krishna River water more effectively to meet Rayalaseema’s needs, he added.
The minister said the approach reflected the Chief Minister’s emphasis on efficient water utilisation and regional development. He added that the Srisailam project’s international recognition underscored its long-standing contribution to power generation, water management and the livelihoods of people across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
