Srinagar police nab suspected drug peddler, 1.6 kg heroin seized

In a significant crackdown on narcotics trafficking, Srinagar police arrested a suspected drug peddler and recovered 1.6 kg of heroin from his possession in the Munawarabad area of the city.

During routine checking near the sewage treatment plant, a team from Khanyar Police Station intercepted a suspicious individual. Upon search, authorities recovered two packets of heroin weighing approximately 1.6 kg from his bag. The accused has been identified as Fayaz Ahmad Dar, a resident of Ichgam in Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir.

A case under Sections 8 and 21 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act has been registered at Khanyar Police Station. Police said investigations are ongoing to trace the source of the consignment and the network involved in narcotics trafficking.

Officials hinted at a possible cross-border dimension to the case, noting that Jammu and Kashmir’s porous borders have previously been exploited by drug syndicates for smuggling narcotics into India. Law enforcement agencies are examining links to transnational drug cartels operating in the region.

The seizure underscores authorities’ intensified efforts to curb the inflow of heroin and other illicit drugs, which have seen rising demand across northern India.
