Sri Sathya Sai Baba - A Life of Love, Service, and Universal Values
The recent birth centenary celebrations of the late spiritual leader, Sri Sathya Sai Baba, in Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh, served as a powerful reminder of his enduring global impact. On Sunday, November 23, Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan highlighted that Baba's life and legacy continue to inspire "millions and millions across the world" because of his profound teachings. Speaking at the event, the Vice President emphasized that in "today's global environment marked by uncertainty, conflict and stress," the Guru’s teachings have become "more relevant than ever."
Sai Baba’s central philosophy was distilled into simple, yet transformative, eternal values: "Love all, serve all; help ever, hurt never." These guiding principles, the Vice President noted, shaped every initiative Baba undertook and every life he touched. His entire life was dedicated to the upliftment of humanity, successfully transcending the boundaries of caste, religion, class, and nationality.
The Relevance of Universal Spirituality
Vice President Radhakrishnan stressed that Sai Baba's core message provides a necessary anchor in a fractured modern world. "Bhagawan Sathya Sai Baba's teachings have become more relevant than ever," he said. By embracing selfless service and moral responsibility, societies can strengthen not only their institutions but also "the very soul of our society."
A cornerstone of Sai Baba’s philosophy was the concept of the unity of God. The Vice President quoted this fundamental teaching, stating, "God is one. No religion can divide society. That is the greatest preaching of Sai Baba." His life's work exemplified true spirituality, a spirituality that is not separate from daily life, but one that emerges through compassion, service, and the sincerity of our actions.
Baba's teachings, which are rooted in the eternal values of truth, righteousness, peace, love and non-violence, remain the basis for a harmonious and progressive society. His universal acceptance earned him devotees from various foreign countries, demonstrating the non-sectarian appeal of his message.
A Legacy of Transformative Service
The enduring impact of Sri Sathya Sai Baba is perhaps best seen in the vast charitable work continued by the Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust. The Trust continues to carry forward Baba’s legacy, transforming countless lives across the country through its initiatives in health care, education, and social welfare.
The Vice President singled out the Trust's commitment to education, mentioning his attendance at the convocation of the Sathya Sai Baba University on the preceding Saturday. He praised the institution for providing totally free education, which he noted is "perhaps the only institution to do so."
In the healthcare sector, the Trust runs mobile rural health services that have become "a vital lifeline for communities in remote areas," successfully reaching those often overlooked by conventional systems.
A Symbol of Love and Cross-State Unity
Beyond spirituality and charity, the Vice President highlighted Sai Baba's significant contribution to regional infrastructure and unity. He recalled Baba's role in the renovation and revitalization of the Telugu Ganga project, an initiative aimed at providing drinking water to the city of Chennai from Andhra Pradesh.
Radhakrishnan emphasized that this contribution transcended political boundaries. He pointed out that Sai Baba was the "only saint in the whole world" to visit the house of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, a gesture that proved that "love and affection have no policies." He concluded that "love and affection will win hearts" and that service is the only force that brings people together. The close relationship between Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu today, particularly the continuous, undisturbed supply of water to Chennai, is a direct result of Sai Baba’s great contribution to regenerating the Telugu Ganga project. The Vice President attributed the continuous flow of water to Chennai today to the "great blessings of Sai Baba."
