Sri Lanka-Russia Energy talks intensify as Fuel shortages bite
Sri Lanka has opened talks with Russia to secure oil supplies as the country grapples with a severe energy crunch. The discussions began on Thursday in Colombo, led by Russian Deputy Energy Minister Roman Marshavin , who is visiting the island to discuss strengthening bilateral energy ties.
Officials from Sri Lanka’s state oil sector expressed optimism that the negotiations could result in purchases of both crude and refined petroleum products , helping to stabilize fuel availability. The talks are part of broader efforts to enhance energy security and cooperation between the two nations, particularly as global oil markets remain volatile due to tensions in the Middle East.
Further discussions are expected between Marshavin and President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to explore long-term collaboration in fuel supply and strategic energy partnerships. Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan government has implemented measures such as fuel rationing and a four-day workweek for state employees to conserve limited resources. Authorities have assured that fuel supplies will be maintained through mid-May.
Russia has responded positively to Sri Lanka’s request. Moscow has indicated its readiness to assist Colombo and has agreed in principle to supply refined fuel. Russian officials described the support as a demonstration of strong bilateral ties, emphasizing their willingness to help Sri Lanka navigate the current energy challenges.
Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) sources said Sri Lanka aims to secure enough fuel for roughly three months, with a final decision on quantities and delivery expected shortly. This move follows recent changes in international sanctions, which now allow countries like Sri Lanka to purchase Russian oil more easily. Experts note that several Asian nations are turning to Russia as a viable supplier amid uncertainty in traditional oil markets.
The talks reflect Colombo’s pragmatic approach to managing the energy crisis while strengthening strategic partnerships in a shifting global oil landscape.
