Sri Lanka Launches Massive Sea Rescue Operation as Fishermen Go Missing Amid Rough Weather

Sri Lanka’s Navy and Air Force have launched a coordinated search-and-rescue operation after several fishermen were reported missing or stranded at sea amid worsening weather conditions and rough ocean conditions.

According to officials, a number of fishermen had ventured into the sea before authorities imposed a temporary fishing ban due to dangerous weather conditions. Director General of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Susantha Kahawatta said several fishermen who had already entered the waters were now facing difficulties.

A fishing boat that departed from the northwestern coastal town of Chilaw with two fishermen onboard has been reported missing, prompting authorities to intensify rescue efforts.

In another incident, the body of a fisherman from Negombo was recovered after his boat reportedly collided with a rock while navigating through turbulent seas. The incident highlighted the risks faced by fishermen during the ongoing adverse weather conditions.

The Sri Lanka Air Force deployed a surveillance aircraft to support Navy teams involved in the search operation. Officials said aerial monitoring would help locate missing boats and fishermen in affected maritime zones.

Meanwhile, authorities issued a separate warning after 17 empty shipping containers were found floating approximately 17 nautical miles off Colombo Port. The containers reportedly fell into the sea from a cargo vessel travelling from Male to Colombo and could pose a serious threat to fishing vessels operating in the area.

Sri Lanka’s Department of Meteorology has warned that sea conditions along the northwestern, eastern and southern coastal regions are expected to remain extremely rough, with waves likely to rise between two and three metres.

Authorities have urged fishermen and coastal communities to remain cautious and avoid entering the sea until weather conditions improve.
