Captain Pat Cummins led from the front as Sunrisers Hyderabad continued their impressive IPL 2026 campaign with a commanding 33-run victory over Punjab Kings in a high-scoring clash at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Wednesday. The win lifted SRH to the top of the points table and strengthened their chances of securing a playoff berth.

Batting first after Punjab opted to bowl, Hyderabad posted a massive 235 for 4, powered by brilliant half-centuries from Heinrich Klaasen and Ishan Kishan . Punjab Kings, despite a fighting unbeaten century from Australia’s Cooper Connolly , could only manage 202 for 7 in reply, suffering their third consecutive defeat of the season.

SRH once again showcased their aggressive batting approach in the Powerplay. Openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head attacked from the outset, putting Punjab’s bowlers under immediate pressure on a batting-friendly surface. Abhishek smashed 35 off just 13 balls with four sixes, while Head struck 38 from 19 deliveries as Hyderabad raced to 79 for 1 in the first six overs.

Punjab’s poor fielding then proved costly. Multiple dropped catches and a missed stumping opportunity allowed Klaasen and Kishan to dominate the middle overs. Klaasen, who survived an early reprieve, punished PBKS with a powerful 69 off 43 balls, smashing four sixes and three boundaries. Kishan, who also benefited from two missed chances, produced a fluent 55 off 32 deliveries and shifted momentum firmly in SRH’s favour with three consecutive sixes off Vijaykumar Vyshak.

Veteran spinner Yuzvendra Chahal was the lone bright spot for Punjab’s bowling attack with figures of 1 for 32, but poor support in the field denied him further success. Nitish Kumar Reddy added late fireworks with an unbeaten 29 off 13 balls as SRH finished with 17 sixes overall.

Chasing a daunting 236, Punjab Kings never recovered from an early collapse. Cummins struck key blows with the new ball, dismissing Priyansh Arya, while Prabhsimran Singh and captain Shreyas Iyer also fell cheaply. Punjab slipped to 57 for 3 in the Powerplay, leaving too much work for the middle order.

Connolly fought a lone battle with a sensational unbeaten 107 off 59 balls, hitting seven fours and eight sixes, but lacked support from the other end. Cummins finished with figures of 2 for 34, while Shivang Kumar claimed two wickets as SRH sealed another dominant victory and further established themselves as one of the strongest contenders for the IPL 2026 title.
