An intense political atmosphere ahead of the 2026 Kerala Assembly elections set the backdrop as leaders across party lines paused campaigning to extend greetings on Good Friday , joining believers in reflecting on the sacrifice of Jesus Christ . Adding to the significance of the day, national leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Vice President C P Radhakrishnan paid tributes, highlighting Christ’s enduring message of compassion , forgiveness, and harmony. Modi said the occasion reminds people of Christ’s sacrifice and prayed for brotherhood and hope to guide society, while Radhakrishnan urged citizens to follow the path of humility , selflessness , and righteousness.

The Christian community across Kerala observed Good Friday with deep devotion, traditional rituals, and widespread participation. Churches witnessed large gatherings of believers engaging in prayers , fasting, and acts of penitence , reflecting on Christ’s suffering and crucifixion.

Good Friday holds profound significance in Christianity , marking the crucifixion of Jesus Christ at Calvary. It symbolises the ultimate act of sacrifice for humanity’s redemption and highlights the enduring values of love , forgiveness, and compassion. Observed during Holy Week , it precedes Easter Sunday, which celebrates the resurrection, making it one of the most important days in the Christian calendar.

In Kerala, political leaders contesting the elections also joined the observances. Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan , contesting from Paravur, extended greetings via social media, while Congress candidate K Muraleedharan participated in a ‘Way of the Cross’ procession in the state capital. State Minister Roshy Augustine , representing Kerala Congress (M), undertook the traditional pilgrimage by climbing the Malayattoor hills in Ernakulam district.

Thousands of devotees joined the pilgrimage to the hilltop shrine, believed to have been visited by St Thomas the Apostle in AD 52. Pilgrims carried wooden crosses, symbolising the burden borne by Christ during his final moments, reenacting his journey to crucifixion.

Across the state, churches organised special prayer services , while believers observed austerity by avoiding worldly comforts. ‘Way of the Cross’ processions were held in multiple locations, retracing the path of Christ’s suffering through symbolic enactments.
