Spin and batting brilliance seal India’s innings victory

India’s vice-captain Ravindra Jadeja once again proved his worth as a genuine all-rounder, scoring an unbeaten century and taking four wickets to help India crush the West Indies by an innings and 140 runs inside three days in the opening Test at Ahmedabad. With this emphatic victory, India took a commanding 1-0 lead in the four-match series.

Trailing by 286 runs after India declared their overnight score of 448 for 5, the West Indies stumbled in their second innings, being bowled out for 146 in just 45.1 overs. Jadeja emerged as the star bowler, claiming 4 for 54, while pacers Mohammed Siraj (4/40 and 3/31) and Jasprit Bumrah (3/42) dominated earlier in the match.

The second Test will be held in New Delhi from October 10-14.

Batting brilliance sets the tone

India’s batting display was relentless. Opener KL Rahul ended a nine-year-long home century drought with a composed 100, while wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel scored his maiden Test ton, finishing with 125. Jadeja, continuing his purple patch, added 104 not out. The hosts amassed a massive lead that allowed them to impose an innings defeat on the West Indies, who struggled to cope with both the pace and spin of the Indian attack.

“Honestly, I think this was the perfect game for us. Three centuries, and we fielded really well, so no complaints,” said skipper Shubman Gill at the post-match presentation.

Jadeja’s spin magic seals the victory

On Day Three, India declared at their overnight total and let Jadeja’s spin dominate. Exploiting rough patches on the pitch, Jadeja ran through the West Indies’ top order, reducing them to 66/5 by lunch. Siraj contributed with a crucial two-wicket over after lunch, while Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, and Jadeja finished off the remaining batters efficiently.

The West Indies started positively with openers Tagenarine Chanderpaul (8) and John Campbell (14), but Nitish Reddy’s stunning catch at square leg dismissed Chanderpaul early, setting the tone for India’s spinners. Campbell was soon caught at short leg off Jadeja, followed by the dismissals of Brandon King (5) and Roston Chase (1). Shai Hope (6) also fell to brilliant fielding from Yashasvi Jaiswal at short third man.

Kuldeep Yadav claimed the wicket of Jayden Seales (22), bringing an end to the West Indies’ resistance. The visitors’ batting order collapsed like a pack of cards, leaving India in complete control.

This dominant performance highlighted India’s superiority in all departments: pace, spin, batting depth, and fielding sharpness. The track, which offered assistance to pacers on Day One and some help to spinners on Day Three, was expertly exploited by the hosts.
