Spain’s ruling Socialist government has been plunged deeper into political turmoil after police searched the headquarters of the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) in Madrid as part of a widening corruption and judicial interference investigation linked to former party insiders.

The operation, carried out by Spain’s Civil Guard under orders from National Court judge Santiago Pedraz , marks a significant escalation in a series of scandals surrounding Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s political circle. Investigators seized documents and electronic records connected to allegations of efforts to manipulate judicial proceedings and undermine anti-corruption probes.

At the center of the investigation is former Socialist Party member Leire Díez , whose case emerged in 2025 after leaked audio recordings allegedly captured discussions about discrediting members of the Civil Guard’s anti-corruption unit and influencing state prosecutors. Authorities are now examining whether Díez received payments linked to party operatives to carry out those activities.

The PSOE has denied institutional involvement, insisting Díez acted independently. Díez, who has since left the party, has also denied wrongdoing.

The probe has expanded to include former Socialist heavyweight Santos Cerdán , once one of Sánchez’s closest political allies and former organizational secretary of the party. Cerdán is already under investigation in the broader “Koldo case,” a major corruption scandal involving alleged kickbacks tied to public contracts awarded during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to court documents cited by Spanish media, investigators suspect the existence of a network involving former officials, lawyers, business figures and police personnel aimed at obstructing investigations affecting the ruling party. Those being investigated face allegations including bribery, influence peddling, false testimony, forgery of documents, and corruption .

The crisis has widened further with separate investigations involving Sánchez’s wife and brother over alleged influence peddling, which both deny. Former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero is also facing scrutiny in a separate airline bailout case.

Although Sánchez has not been directly implicated, the growing number of corruption probes has intensified pressure on his fragile minority coalition government. Opposition parties, led by the conservative Popular Party , have renewed demands for early elections, accusing the administration of institutional decay.

Despite mounting political pressure, Sánchez has rejected calls for snap polls and vowed full cooperation with judicial authorities as Spain faces one of its most serious political scandals in recent years.
