The 2026 FIFA World Cup concluded on a historic note, with the Spain-Argentina final attracting more than 60 million viewers across the United States, underlining football's growing popularity in North America and capping one of the tournament's most successful editions.

According to broadcaster Fox, the English-language telecast of Spain's 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina was watched by 38.9 million viewers, peaking at 51.7 million. The figures make it the most-watched English-language soccer broadcast in US television history. Spanish-language broadcaster Telemundo reported a preliminary audience of 22.6 million, pushing the combined US viewership beyond the 60-million mark.

The tournament, jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, featured an expanded format with 48 teams, 104 matches and nearly six weeks of football. Despite concerns over logistics, travel, scheduling and the larger tournament size, the competition was widely regarded as a success both on and off the pitch.

Television ratings remained remarkably strong throughout the tournament, even after the United States was eliminated in the Round of 16 by Belgium. Fox averaged 7.74 million viewers across all 104 matches, more than doubling its average audience from the 2022 World Cup and nearly tripling that of 2018, highlighting football's rapidly expanding fan base in the country.

The tournament also enjoyed outstanding attendance, with nearly seven million spectators filling stadiums across the three host nations. FIFA President Gianni Infantino hailed the event as an overwhelming success, saying record crowds and global television audiences demonstrated the sport's growing worldwide appeal.

While extreme summer heat affected a handful of matches and wildfire smoke briefly threatened the final in New Jersey, weather-related disruptions were largely avoided. On the field, the expanded 48-team format produced several memorable upsets, with emerging nations such as Cape Verde, Congo and Curaçao delivering impressive performances before traditional powerhouses eventually dominated the latter stages.

The tournament also witnessed political challenges, including visa issues involving Iran and scrutiny over immigration policies in the United States. However, these controversies did little to overshadow the football itself, as thrilling matches, packed stadiums and record-breaking television audiences combined to make the 2026 World Cup one of the most memorable editions in the tournament's history.
