South Korean companies delivered robust financial results in 2024, with aggregate corporate earnings rising sharply on the back of strong semiconductor exports and expanding business activity, government statistics show. The combined before‑tax net profit of surveyed firms reached 181.9 trillion won (about US$123.9 billion) last year, up 20.6 per cent from 150.8 trillion won in 2023 , reversing a two‑year decline in overall profitability.

The Ministry of Data and Statistics attributed this growth primarily to a rebound in demand for semiconductors, especially memory chips for artificial intelligence (AI) applications, which helped lift export performance across the technology sector.

Reflecting the improved earnings environment, companies stepped up investment in research and development. Total corporate R&D spending climbed 21.4 per cent year‑on‑year to 97 trillion won , underscoring a continued focus on innovation and competitiveness.

Sales also grew, with the surveyed firms reporting combined revenue of 3,371.1 trillion won , a 5.2 per cent increase from 2023.

The data showed that 6,009 out of 14,922 companies (40.3 per cent) operated subsidiaries both domestically and overseas, highlighting the global footprint of Korean firms. Among foreign operations, China hosted the largest share (21.9 per cent) of subsidiaries, followed by the United States (16.4 per cent) and Vietnam (11.8 per cent) .

In 2024, 401 companies expanded into new business areas , with 54.9 per cent of them in manufacturing , indicating continued diversification beyond core operations.

Industry analysts note that the broader Korean economy and corporate sector have benefited from a sustained boom in semiconductor demand tied to AI infrastructure and data center growth. Export figures for semiconductors have been record‑setting, with shipments of high‑value memory chips such as high‑bandwidth memory (HBM) and DDR5 contributing to overall export growth and helping Korea break export records in 2025.

The surge in semiconductor performance has echoed in combined operating profits for top domestic firms, which also climbed significantly in 2024, propelled by key players such as SK hynix and Samsung Electronics. The rebound from earlier downturns in chip markets has reinforced Korea’s position as a global leader in high‑end memory production.

Overall, the 2024 results illustrate the central role of the technology and manufacturing sectors in sustaining corporate earnings growth, even as the broader export landscape shows mixed performance outside of semiconductors.
