South Africa House Party Shooting Leaves 11 Dead, 3 Wounded As Police Launch 72-Hour Manhunt

At least 11 people were killed and three wounded after three gunmen opened fire at a house party in South Africa’s KwaMakhutha township, about 30 kilometres (19 miles) south of Durban, police said Wednesday.

The shooting took place late Tuesday night when the attackers entered a house in the Ziko area and opened fire on people attending a gathering. Thirteen men and a woman believed to be pregnant were among those inside, police said.

Ten victims died at the scene, while another later died in hospital, taking the death toll to 11. Three other people survived with gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital for treatment. The woman believed to be pregnant was among those killed.

South African police have launched a 72-hour manhunt for the three attackers. Acting National Police Commissioner Puleng Dimpane ordered a specialised tracking operation to locate and arrest those responsible. No arrests had been reported as of Wednesday.

Police said the motive remains under investigation, but a feud between rival groups cannot be ruled out. Reuters reported that authorities were examining the possibility that the shooting was gang-related. Some of the victims were also reportedly known to Crime Intelligence in connection with alleged illegal activities, although police have not disclosed further details.

The attack has renewed attention on South Africa’s persistent problem of mass shootings and violent crime. KwaZulu-Natal authorities have condemned the attack and expressed condolences to the victims’ families as investigators continue searching for the gunmen.

Police have appealed for information that could help identify the suspects and establish what led to the deadly attack.
