Sourav Ganguly Appointed As Delhi Capitals Head Coach Ahead of IPL 2027
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has been appointed head coach of Delhi Capitals ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, returning to a franchise where he has held several key roles since 2019.
Ganguly replaces Hemang Badani, who was in charge for the previous two IPL seasons. Delhi Capitals failed to make the playoffs in both 2025 and 2026, finishing sixth in the 2026 season. The franchise is still searching for its maiden IPL title, having last reached the final in 2020.
The 54-year-old Ganguly first joined Delhi Capitals as an Advisor in 2019 and subsequently served in senior leadership positions, including Director of Cricket for both the men's and women's teams. His appointment as head coach marks his first IPL head-coaching assignment. He also gained formal coaching experience with sister franchise Pretoria Capitals in South Africa's SA20 league, where he served as head coach.
Ganguly said he was excited to take charge of a franchise that has remained close to him. He expressed his intention to work with the squad and build a “strong and fearless team” for the new season.
Delhi Capitals chairman and co-owner Parth Jindal welcomed the appointment, calling Ganguly an integral part of the franchise and expressing confidence that his leadership and experience can help the team challenge for the IPL title.
The appointment comes as Delhi Capitals enter a new phase off the field. The franchise is jointly owned by JSW Group and GMR Group, with operational control alternating between the two groups. JSW Sports will oversee the franchise for the 2027 and 2028 IPL cycles after GMR's two-year stint ended with the 2026 season.
The playing group is also undergoing changes. Former captain Rishabh Pant has returned to Delhi Capitals after a trade with Lucknow Super Giants, with wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav moving in the opposite direction. Ganguly's appointment and Pant's return are therefore part of a significant reset as Delhi look to revive their fortunes in IPL 2027.
