
Sophie Turner Steps Into Iconic Role of Lara Croft for ‘Tomb Raider’ Reboot
The first look of Hollywood star Sophie Turner as iconic video game character Lara Croft has been unveiled, offering fans an exciting glimpse of her transformation for the upcoming ‘Tomb Raider’ reboot series .
On Thursday, Prime Video released Turner’s official image from the series, showcasing the actor in Lara Croft’s signature action-ready avatar. In the image, the Game of Thrones star is seen striking a confident pose in shorts, sunglasses and wielding dual pistols, perfectly capturing the fearless and adventurous spirit of the legendary archaeologist.
According to Variety , production for the highly anticipated series is currently underway.
Apart from Turner in the lead role, the ensemble cast includes Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Martin Bobb-Semple, Jack Bannon, John Heffernan, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, Celia Imrie , and August Wittgenstein , among others.
Based on the globally popular ‘Tomb Raider’ video game franchise , the series will follow the globe-trotting adventures of Lara Croft, an intrepid archaeologist known for her intelligence, athleticism and combat skills. The character has previously been portrayed on the big screen by Angelina Jolie in the early 2000s and later by Alicia Vikander in the 2018 reboot film.
Speaking about stepping into the iconic role, Sophie Turner said she has long admired Lara Croft and considers her a powerful symbol of female strength.
“I’ve been a long-time fan of Tomb Raider and the character of Lara. She has always felt, for me, very emboldened in a male-dominated world. She’s a fierce female role model,” Turner said in a statement.
The original Tomb Raider video game debuted in 1996 , instantly turning Lara Croft into one of the most recognisable female action icons in gaming history. The franchise has since expanded through multiple sequels, remastered editions and film adaptations.
The upcoming reboot series is being developed by Crystal Dynamics in association with Amazon MGM Studios . It is created and written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge , with Jonathan Van Tulleken directing the project.
Executive producers include Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Jenny Robbins for Wells Street Films, along with representatives from Crystal Dynamics, Story Kitchen and Legendary Television. The release date for the series is yet to be announced.
