Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi was discharged from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi on Sunday evening after nearly a week of treatment for an exacerbation of bronchial asthma caused by a chest infection, hospital authorities said.

A senior hospital official said Gandhi was discharged at around 5 pm after responding well to treatment and showing good recovery. She has been advised to continue medication and follow-up care at her residence, with doctors recommending rest and periodic monitoring.

Gandhi, who turned 79 last December, was admitted to the hospital on the evening of January 5 after experiencing breathing difficulties. Doctors said her condition was aggravated by a chest infection, with cold weather and pollution levels also believed to have contributed to the flare-up of her asthma.

She was treated under the supervision of senior chest physician Dr Arup Basu and closely monitored by a team of specialists. Her condition stabilised within a few days of admission and continued to improve steadily during her stay. Treatment included antibiotics and supportive respiratory care.

Hospital authorities said doctors were satisfied with her recovery and deemed her fit for discharge. Congress leaders and supporters expressed relief over the improvement in her health, while medical staff advised continued caution to ensure a full recovery.
