Sonia Gandhi discharged from hospital after recovering from systemic infection

Senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi was discharged from Sir Ganga Ram Hospital early Tuesday morning after a week‑long stay for treatment of a systemic infection , hospital officials said. The 79‑year‑old was admitted late on the night of March 24 with a high fever and infection symptoms and remained under close medical supervision for seven days before her condition improved.

Hospital chairman Dr Ajay Swaroop said Gandhi responded well to a course of IV antibiotics and her medical parameters are now normal , though the treatment regimen will continue for a few more days at home to ensure full recovery. A team of senior specialists , including Dr D.S. Rana, Dr S. Nundy and Dr Arup Basu, oversaw her treatment and monitored her progress throughout her stay.

Gandhi will continue further follow‑up care at her residence , officials added, as doctors recommended continued observation and antibiotic therapy to complete the recovery process.

Her hospitalisation drew visits from family members, with son Rahul Gandhi cancelling scheduled political engagements to be by her side, and daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also present during the early days of her treatment.

The senior leader’s condition had gradually stabilised over the week, with hospital sources earlier describing her as “absolutely normal” before discharge was finalised.
