Sonam Wangchuk's Health Stable as Wife Challenges Hospitalisation in Delhi HC

Climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk remains under medical observation at Safdarjung Hospital, with doctors confirming that his vital parameters are stable despite his prolonged hunger strike. However, the activist has announced that he will continue his indefinite fast beyond the proposed 'Sansad Chalo' march, while his wife has challenged his continued hospitalisation before the Delhi High Court.

According to Safdarjung Hospital, Wangchuk is medically weak after fasting for over three weeks, although his condition remains stable. Doctors are closely monitoring his blood parameters and electrolyte levels, with a multidisciplinary team from VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital, assisted by AIIMS specialists, providing comprehensive medical care and continuous observation.

Wangchuk had sought temporary discharge to participate in the Parliament march, but hospital authorities maintained that his health requires continued medical supervision due to the risks associated with prolonged fasting.

Meanwhile, his wife, Dr. Gitanjali J. Angmo, has appealed against a single-judge Delhi High Court order that refused to direct his transfer to a private hospital. She argued that Wangchuk's stay at Safdarjung Hospital amounts to "illegal detention", contending that he is not under arrest and should be allowed to choose where he receives treatment.

His legal team also alleged a heavy police presence around his hospital ward, describing the atmosphere as unconducive to his recovery. The government, however, has maintained that Wangchuk was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital solely on medical grounds after concerns over his health during the fast.

Despite the legal battle, Wangchuk has reiterated that he will continue his hunger strike unless his demands are addressed. He has indicated he may end the protest if political leaders engage with him and commit to raising the issues central to his campaign in Parliament.

The case has brought Wangchuk's health, hospitalisation, and ongoing protest under intense public and judicial scrutiny as doctors continue to monitor his condition.
