Sonam Wangchuk defends Ladakh agitation, signals willingness for talks with Centre

Environmental activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk on Sunday strongly defended the ongoing agitation in Ladakh demanding statehood and constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule , while indicating that he is willing to join dialogue with the Centre if required.

Addressing a press conference in Kargil, Wangchuk said the demands raised by Ladakh’s people are rooted in democratic rights guaranteed by the Constitution and therefore deserve serious consideration. He noted that Ladakh’s leadership has been engaged in discussions with the government on these issues for nearly five to six years , yet a solution has not emerged.

According to Wangchuk, the delay in resolving the matter stems partly from what he described as a rigid stance during negotiations . He stressed that meaningful dialogue should be carried out with an open mind and sincerity from both sides. “Negotiations should not be about one side winning and the other losing. What we need is a middle path and a win-win approach ,” he said, adding that Ladakh’s leaders have consistently advocated a constructive and gradual process.

The Ladakh-based activist also expressed hope that the ongoing protests would ultimately lead to a positive and amicable resolution , enabling the region’s people to continue contributing to the country’s development and nation-building.

Wangchuk, who was released on March 14 after nearly six months of detention under the National Security Act (NSA) , also addressed the allegations that led to his arrest. He said he was disturbed by certain claims circulating in a video related to the case, noting that if the accusations were true he would not have deserved release, but if they were false they should be clearly refuted .

He emphasised that Ladakh, particularly Kargil , has always stood firmly with the nation and supported the armed forces during times of conflict, including the 1999 Kargil War .

Wangchuk said the government’s decision to revoke the NSA charges appeared aimed at creating a conducive environment for dialogue and building trust . On the possibility of joining talks with the Union Home Ministry , he said he would step forward if his presence becomes necessary.
