Police in Maharashtra have launched an intensive search for a man accused of kidnapping, raping, and blackmailing a 17-year-old girl following an online relationship that began on Instagram.

The suspect, whose identity has not yet been released, is facing multiple charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) , the POCSO Act , and the Information Technology Act .

The ordeal began in early 2025 when the victim, a resident of Valiv in the Palghar district, connected with the accused on Instagram. According to police officials, the digital friendship quickly evolved into a romantic relationship. In February 2025, the teenager eloped with the man to Madhya Pradesh.

At the time of her disappearance, the girl's family filed a kidnapping report. However, her whereabouts remained unknown for several months.

Investigators reveal that the victim was held in Madhya Pradesh between February and September 2025. During this seven-month period, she was allegedly subjected to repeated sexual abuse and physical torture.

The victim managed to escape her captor in September and returned to her parents' home in Palghar. However, her return did not end the harassment. The accused allegedly began a "malicious campaign" on social media, posting objectionable content and private photos of the girl to blackmail her into returning to him.

Following a fresh complaint filed by the victim’s sister, the Valiv police officially registered a new case on December 28, 2025 . The charges against the accused include:

Section 64 (Rape) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

• Violations of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act .

• Provisions of the Information Technology Act related to the non-consensual sharing of private images.

"A search is currently underway to apprehend the suspect," a police official stated. "While the complaint did not specify the exact reason for the delay in reporting the abuse after her return in September, we are treating the matter with the utmost urgency."

Authorities are urging social media users to exercise caution when interacting with strangers online and have reminded the public that sharing or circulating the "objectionable content" posted by the accused is also a punishable offense.
