

SMAM Expands Nationwide as Jangaon Sets Model for Effective Farm Mechanization
MaAmid a renewed push to modernize Indian agriculture, the Government of India is scaling up the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM) 2025–26 , with visible momentum both at the national and grassroots levels. The scheme is not only expanding access to modern farm machinery but is also introducing advanced tools such as agri-drones , reflecting a shift towards precision farming . With rising labour shortages and increasing cultivation costs, SMAM is emerging as a timely intervention aimed at making farming more efficient, cost-effective, and technology-driven across the country.
At the national level, SMAM operates through a combination of subsidies, institutional support, and shared infrastructure . Farmers are provided 40–50% financial assistance to procure equipment such as tractors, rotavators, seed drills, and sprayers, while models like Custom Hiring Centres ensure that even those unable to purchase machinery can access it on rent. This approach is particularly crucial in a country dominated by small and marginal farmers , where fragmented landholdings have traditionally limited mechanization. By lowering entry barriers, the scheme is democratizing access to agricultural technology.
The impact of this policy is becoming increasingly visible at the district level. In Jangaon district , SMAM 2025–26 is being implemented with a budget of ₹2.73 crore , benefiting 334 farmers , with machinery worth ₹88 lakh approved and 138 farmers already receiving equipment. Transparent governance mechanisms, including mandal-level committees , have ensured fair beneficiary selection and efficient distribution. This localized execution is translating policy intent into measurable outcomes on the ground.
A standout example is Devaruppula Mandal , which is emerging as a model for effective implementation. The scheme’s inclusive eligibility—allowing even farmers with less than one acre to access smaller equipment—has broadened participation. With a targeted subsidy structure benefiting SC, ST, women, and small farmers, mechanization is no longer restricted to large landholders. Farmers here are using equipment such as power weeders, cultivators, MB ploughs, and sprayers , resulting in faster operations, reduced labour dependency, and improved productivity.
Similar gains are being reported in Chilpur Mandal , where the distribution of tractor-mounted implements and the introduction of training programs have enhanced both access and effective utilization. This combination of financial support and capacity building highlights a key strength of SMAM ensuring that farmers are not just recipients of machinery but are also equipped with the knowledge to use it efficiently.
Beyond immediate benefits, the scheme is driving a deeper structural transformation in agriculture. Mechanization is enabling timely sowing and harvesting , reducing cultivation time, and allowing farmers to increase cropping intensity. It is also addressing the growing challenge of rural labour shortages by replacing manual work with efficient machines. Importantly, by lowering the cost of cultivation and improving yields, SMAM is contributing to higher farm incomes and greater economic stability for rural households.
Farmer experiences underline this transformation. K. Sirisha , a small farmer, reported reduced time and cost after receiving a rotavator, leading to better yields through timely operations. K. Sampath Raju highlighted the easing of labour burden, while B. Ram Singh pointed to improved speed, accuracy, and cost efficiency clear indicators of a shift towards modernized agriculture .
In the long run, SMAM 2025–26 is poised to reshape Indian agriculture by accelerating the transition from labour-intensive practices to technology-driven systems .
