Slum clusters of Prakasam, Srikakulam win sustainability awards

In a remarkable achievement that underscores its commitment to urban cleanliness and community empowerment, the Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA) has secured four prestigious state-level awards at the inaugural Swachh Andhra Awards 2025. These honors, announced as part of Andhra Pradesh's pioneering state-wide sanitation initiative, celebrate MEPMA's innovative blend of digital communication and on-the-ground environmental practices, setting a new benchmark for urban poverty alleviation programs.

Launched earlier this year by the Andhra Pradesh government, the Swachh Andhra Awards aim to foster excellence in cleanliness across diverse sectors, from government departments to community groups. Modeled after the national Swachh Survekshan, the program evaluates participants on innovation, sustainability, and public engagement. MEPMA's sweep of four awards out of hundreds evaluated highlights its dual focus: leveraging social media to amplify awareness and mobilizing Slum Level Federations (SLFs) for tangible, eco-friendly actions in underserved urban areas.

Spotlight on the Awards

At the heart of MEPMA's triumph is the “Best Social Media Management Award”, a standout victory in a competitive field of 19 government departments. This accolade recognizes MEPMA's mastery in crafting high-quality, creative content that resonates with audiences. Through consistent postings, interactive campaigns, and robust engagement metrics like likes, shares, and comments MEPMA has effectively championed Swachh Andhra themes, turning complex sanitation messages into relatable, actionable stories. As one of the first state-specific honors of its kind, this award positions MEPMA as a leader in using digital tools to drive behavioral change and foster community involvement in urban hygiene.

Complementing this digital prowess are three “State-Level SLF Awards” in sustainable living categories, earned by MEPMA-affiliated federations from Prakasam, Srikakulam, and Visakhapatnam districts. These include:

- One award in the “Terrace Garden” category for Prakasam district's SLF, praising innovative rooftop greening that enhances urban biodiversity and combats heat islands.

- Two awards in the “Home Compost” category for Srikakulam and Visakhapatnam SLFs, lauding their scalable models for household waste segregation and nutrient-rich composting, which reduce landfill burdens and promote circular economies at the neighborhood level.

These grassroots wins reflect MEPMA's strength in empowering urban self-help groups (SHGs), transforming local challenges into opportunities for self-reliance and environmental stewardship.

Grand ceremony awaits

The awards will be formally presented on Monday, October 6, at the iconic Tummalapalli Kalakshetram in Vijayawada, drawing dignitaries, community leaders, and sanitation advocates. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu will personally hand over the Best Social Media Management Award to MEPMA Mission Director N. Tej Bharath, symbolizing the government's endorsement of technology-driven poverty elimination.

In a statement, Mr. Tej Bharath expressed profound gratitude, saying, "This recognition is a testament to the unwavering dedication of our MEPMA team and the thousands of urban self-help groups who turn vision into reality every day." He extended special thanks to Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister P. Narayana for his visionary guidance and Principal Secretary S. Suresh Kumar for meticulous oversight. "These achievements are not ours alone; they belong to the resilient communities we serve, who are building greener, healthier neighborhoods one step at a time," Mr. Bharath added, dedicating the honors to SHG members across the state.

MEPMA's success story extends beyond these awards; earlier in 2025, the organization clinched nine SKOCH Platinum Awards for broader poverty alleviation initiatives, including housing for the homeless and financial inclusion for SHGs. As Andhra Pradesh pushes toward a "Swachh" (clean) and "Swarn" (golden) future under the Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0, MEPMA's multifaceted approach offers a replicable blueprint for other states grappling with urban poverty and waste management.
