Slogans Over Support? Minister Konda Surekha Slams BJP on Telangana Funding
A sharp political controversy has erupted in Telangana after Endowments and Forest Minister Konda Surekha questioned the political use of the slogan “Jai Shri Ram” , triggering a fierce backlash from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and sparking a wider debate on the intersection of faith and governance .
Speaking at a public meeting in Warangal, Surekha alleged that the BJP focuses more on organising rallies and raising religious slogans than on securing central funds for the state. She questioned whether chanting “Jai Shri Ram” would bring financial assistance or development projects , arguing that such rhetoric does not address Telangana’s pressing needs. She also took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying his speeches during state visits do not translate into tangible benefits.
The minister further criticised Union leaders from Telangana, including G. Kishan Reddy and Bandi Sanjay Kumar , accusing them of failing to effectively pursue funds from the Centre. She alleged that despite “ injustice to the state ,” they have remained largely silent and inactive.
The BJP responded strongly, with Bandi Sanjay Kumar warning that “attacking Hindutva is not a free pass anymore.” He argued that remarks targeting religious beliefs are increasingly met with public resistance, often reflected in election outcomes . Citing past controversies involving leaders like Pinarayi Vijayan, M. K. Stalin, Mamata Banerjee, Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, and K. Chandrashekar Rao, he said voters have consistently pushed back against perceived insults to Hindu faith .
The BJP also accused Surekha of disrespecting Lord Rama , demanding an unconditional apology and questioning her suitability to hold the Endowments portfolio .
The controversy underscores a deeper political divide development versus symbolism . While the Congress frames the issue as one of governance and accountability, the BJP views it as an attack on cultural identity . As Telangana’s political landscape heats up, the row highlights how quickly debates over policy can shift into emotionally charged discussions around religion and politics .
