Skilled Hands, Empty Seats: Anand Mahindra’s Warning for an AI-Age Workforce

The global debate on artificial intelligence has largely become a tug-of-war between hope and fear. One side celebrates the efficiency and productivity the technology promises; the other warns of mass unemployment and the hollowing out of white-collar careers. But amid this loud digital noise, Anand Mahindra has pointed towards a quieter, more alarming crisis one that is unfolding not in the boardrooms of software giants, but in the workshops and service centres that keep economies running. His recent tweet, quoting Ford CEO Jim Farley, reveals a striking fact: thousands of mechanic positions in the United States remain vacant, even when salaries reach more than $120,000 a year.

This is not merely a commentary on America’s labour shortages. It is a warning for India, and indeed the world, that the glamour associated with white-collar jobs has eclipsed the dignity and economic value of skilled trades. In a society obsessed with coding bootcamps, MBA programs and high-salaried IT careers, the allure of working with one’s hands has faded drastically. The consequence is clear: as economies modernise, the number of young people entering vocational, mechanical and technical trades is shrinking.

Mahindra’s argument strikes at a deeper structural imbalance. For decades, countries like India have celebrated engineering degrees while neglecting engineering skills. The result is a generation of “qualified” engineers who prefer desk jobs, even if unrelated to their training, rather than roles that involve physical craftsmanship. Ironically, the world now faces a shortage not of degrees but of dexterity. Mechanics, electricians, plumbers, welders, tool operators—these are the very roles AI cannot easily replace. They require cognitive judgment, physical precision, emotional intelligence and the kind of apprenticeship that no machine can simulate.

The Ford CEO’s revelation that thousands of high-paying mechanic jobs remain unfilled should shock policymakers. These are not low-wage, low-prestige roles; they are essential positions that keep supply chains functioning and economies moving. If the United States, with its sophisticated vocational infrastructure, faces this vacuum, the challenge for India where vocational education remains grossly undervalued is even more daunting.

This crisis has cultural roots. For years, Indian families have encouraged children to pursue “safe” white-collar careers, believing that service sector jobs offer stability and respectability. The narrative that IT is a ladder to prosperity has overshadowed the reality that the nation’s growth also depends on people who build, repair and maintain real-world infrastructure. The result is a generational shift in aspiration: everyone wants to work in tech, but far fewer want to work with tools.

Ironically, the AI revolution amplifies the importance of these skilled roles. As AI automates documentation, data entry, customer support and other digital tasks, the labour market will tilt back toward jobs that require hands-on expertise. The winners of the AI era, Mahindra argues, will not be those who can merely operate computers, but those who can operate the world. They will be the welders in factories, the mechanics in service centres, the technicians maintaining electric vehicles, the workers installing renewable energy systems, the people whose skills remain stubbornly irreplaceable.

Policy responses must shift accordingly. India’s skilling programs require a complete overhaul moving beyond certificates and short-term training modules to holistic, apprenticeship-driven education. Industrial Training Institutes must be modernised, made aspirational, and aligned with industry needs. The private sector, too, must step in with stronger partnerships, ensuring that vocational roles come with career progression, security, dignity, and competitive salaries.

The crisis Mahindra highlights is not just economic but social: an undervaluation of the very professions that build the physical world. As the digital economy accelerates and machines take over predictable tasks, societies must re-elevate the status of craftsmanship. The future may depend less on coding languages and more on human capability the unique blend of judgment, touch, and experience.

Mahindra’s message is a wake-up call. In a world mesmerised by artificial intelligence, we may have overlooked the indispensable intelligence of human hands. If nations do not correct this imbalance now, the cost will be far higher than unfilled vacancies. It will be a future where industries stall, growth slows, and societies struggle to find the people who can do the work machines cannot.
