Skill India mission expands into AI education

India is accelerating its push toward an AI-driven future with the launch of the Skilling for AI Readiness (SOAR) program, a strategic initiative aimed at integrating artificial intelligence (AI) competencies into the country’s education and skill development framework. Launched in July 2025, the program coincides with the 10-year milestone of the Skill India Mission, which has empowered millions through various skilling initiatives since 2015.

Under the National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme (NAPS-2), 1,480 apprentices have already been trained in AI-focused roles such as AI Data Engineer and Machine Learning Engineer between FY 2022-23 and FY 2025-26. The Union Budget 2025-26 allocated ₹500 crore to establish a Centre of Excellence in AI for education, further underscoring the government’s commitment to technological advancement.

SOAR targets students from classes 6 to 12 and educators, offering three 15-hour modules for students and a 45-hour independent module for teachers. The curriculum focuses on foundational AI concepts, machine learning, and ethical AI use, aiming to prepare students for careers in emerging tech sectors.

According to the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), the program supports Atmanirbhar Bharat by equipping youth with skills for high-demand industries such as healthcare, finance, manufacturing, and education. By embedding AI literacy in schools and vocational training, SOAR not only enhances digital literacy but also fosters innovation and ethical technology use.

The initiative aligns with National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 recommendations and represents a key step in India’s vision to become a global leader in AI-driven education, workforce development, and technology-driven economic growth.
