Six zones, 1,000 police: Goa prepares for Major Lairai Devi festival gathering
The Shree Lairai Devi Festival at the Shree Lairai Devi Temple will commence on Monday under heightened security , with nearly 1,000 police personnel deployed to ensure the safety of thousands of devotees expected to attend.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Saturday reviewed the preparedness with senior officials from the district administration, police, and temple committee, stressing the need for strict vigilance following last year’s tragic stampede that claimed six lives .
According to officials, the festival area has been divided into six security zones , each headed by a Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM)-rank officer . Authorities have warned that anyone creating disturbances or engaging in unruly behaviour will be immediately removed from the venue. The Chief Minister also urged devotees to cooperate with officials to ensure the smooth conduct of the event.
The annual festival, held in Shirgao village, draws tens of thousands of devotees from across Goa and neighbouring states. One of its most striking rituals is the traditional fire-walking ceremony , where barefoot devotees walk across burning embers as an act of faith and devotion to Goddess Lairai, believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Durga .
Deeply rooted in local culture, the festival is not only a religious gathering but also a significant cultural event symbolising devotion, endurance, and community unity . Authorities, including police, health services, and fire personnel, have been instructed to remain on high alert to prevent any untoward incidents and ensure the celebrations conclude peacefully .
