Six Killed, 17 Injured As Bus Crashes Into Truck In Telangana’s Suryapet

A devastating road accident on the Hyderabad–Vijayawada National Highway in Telangana’s Suryapet district claimed six lives and left 17 people injured early Wednesday morning after a private electric bus rammed into a truck near Kodad.

The bus, carrying 44 passengers, was travelling from Hyderabad to Eluru in Andhra Pradesh when the accident occurred around 5 am. According to preliminary police findings, the truck was carrying heavy iron poles used in industrial applications. The truck reportedly lost control, hit the road divider and came to a halt on the highway.

The bus subsequently crashed into the rear of the stationary truck. The impact caused the iron poles to penetrate the right side of the bus, severely injuring passengers seated towards the front. Five of the six people killed were women, police said.

The injured were immediately shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. Of the 17 injured, two people in critical condition were shifted to a hospital in Vijayawada, Suryapet Superintendent of Police K. Narasimha said.

Police said the deceased were from different districts of Andhra Pradesh and included two software professionals. Investigators are examining whether speeding contributed to the accident and are also trying to establish the precise circumstances surrounding the truck’s collision with the divider.

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy expressed deep shock over the tragedy and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families. He directed the Chief Secretary to ensure that all injured passengers receive the best possible medical care.

Telangana BJP president N. Ramachander Rao urged the government to announce immediate ex-gratia for the victims’ families and strengthen road-safety measures. Congress leader V. Hanumantha Rao called for stricter action against speeding and greater traffic-police surveillance on highways, particularly during the early morning hours when driver fatigue can increase accident risks.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep anguish over the accident, extended his condolences to the families of those killed and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

Telangana Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar also expressed grief and warned that strict action would be taken against the private travel operator if negligence is established. He said the government was continuing efforts to improve road safety across the state.

The police investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the crash and fix responsibility.
