Six Arrested in Tamil Nadu Over Online Leak of Vijay’s ‘Jana Nayagan’
The Tamil Nadu cybercrime wing has arrested six individuals in connection with the alleged online leak of actor Vijay’s highly anticipated film “Jana Nayagan” , which surfaced in HD quality ahead of its theatrical release , police said on Monday.
According to officials, the complaint regarding the unauthorised circulation of the film across multiple digital platforms was received after the movie was reportedly leaked online on April 10, triggering widespread concern within the film industry. The cybercrime investigation centre subsequently registered a case and launched a coordinated probe.
The film, directed by H Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions , has been widely promoted as Vijay’s final film before his full-time entry into politics , adding significant attention to its release and making the leak a major issue for the industry.
Police said multiple special investigation teams were formed to conduct digital forensic analysis and trace the source and distribution network of the pirated content. The investigation led to the identification and arrest of six individuals allegedly involved in uploading and circulating the film through cloud storage platforms and shared drive links .
Officials further stated that digital evidence has been seized from the accused, and all six have been produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody. The accused have been booked under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Information Technology Act, Copyright Act, and Cinematograph Act .
As part of a broader crackdown on piracy, the cybercrime wing has also initiated action to block over 300 infringing links across various platforms. Dedicated monitoring teams are actively tracking social media networks, websites, and file-sharing services to prevent further circulation of the leaked content.
Authorities have issued a strong advisory warning that downloading, streaming, or sharing pirated material is a cognisable offence , and strict action will be taken against violators. Citizens have been urged to report suspicious links through the national cybercrime portal or the helpline number 1930.
Officials clarified that the investigation is still underway and no names of the arrested individuals have been disclosed at this stage . They also stated that there is no confirmed evidence of broader organised or political involvement in the leak case so far. Further inquiry is continuing, police added.
