Sitharaman Heads to US to Boost India Investment Pitch and G20 Cooperation
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has begun a six-day visit to the United States as part of her nine-day tour of Canada and the US, with a packed schedule of meetings with investors, business leaders and global economic policymakers.
Sitharaman arrived at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on Thursday after completing a three-day visit to Canada. She was received by Indian Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Namgya C Khampa and Consul General of India in Chicago Somnath Ghosh, according to an official statement.
During her Chicago visit, Sitharaman is scheduled to participate in a roundtable with prominent investors and hold discussions with CEOs, presidents and senior private-sector representatives. The talks will focus on India’s investment opportunities, economic outlook and strengthening India-US business ties.
She will also visit the Polsky Centre for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of Chicago, where discussions are expected to cover entrepreneurship, innovation, technology commercialisation and stronger links with India’s expanding startup ecosystem. The minister will later interact with members of the Indian community in Chicago.
Sitharaman will then lead the Indian delegation at the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) meeting in Asheville, North Carolina, scheduled for August 31 and September 1 under the US presidency. The meeting will address global economic growth, financial stability and international financial cooperation.
India’s participation in the G20 Finance Track will provide an opportunity to advance its views on global economic challenges and strengthen cooperation with developed and emerging economies. The minister will subsequently travel to New York, where she will participate in an investor roundtable and hold one-to-one meetings with senior executives from the financial sector. Discussions will centre on India’s economic and financial landscape and opportunities for investment.
NASDAQ is also scheduled to host Sitharaman for a bell-ringing ceremony, highlighting the growing intersection of technology, financial markets and capital. Her US visit follows meetings in Canada focused on deepening economic cooperation and attracting investment in energy, artificial intelligence and critical minerals.
