Siri Set for Major AI Overhaul With Image Generation and On-Screen Analysis

Apple is reportedly working on a major overhaul of its voice assistant Siri, aiming to transform it into a full-fledged artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot capable of competing with offerings from OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, and xAI. According to a Bloomberg report, the revamped Siri could be introduced later this year, alongside the iOS 27 update.

The project, internally codenamed “Campos” , is said to focus on reimagining Siri as a generative AI-powered assistant with significantly enhanced conversational abilities. Citing people familiar with the matter, the report said the new Siri will be deeply integrated across Apple’s ecosystem, including iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers through their respective operating systems.

Despite the transformation, Siri is expected to retain its existing functionality and activation methods. However, the chatbot version will reportedly support more advanced capabilities such as sustained back-and-forth conversations, image generation, improved web search, and the ability to analyse on-screen content. The assistant is also said to support both voice and text-based inputs, offering users greater flexibility in how they interact with it.

One of the key new features reportedly includes analysing on-device data to respond to natural-language queries. For instance, users may be able to provide a vague description of an image, and Siri could search the Photos app to locate relevant results. The report claims this functionality will be powered by an AI model supplied by Google, with performance comparable to Gemini 3 .

While Apple is said to be using Google’s AI technology, the company will reportedly maintain strict control over Siri’s responses, in line with its longstanding focus on privacy and user data protection. Apple and Google have previously stated that safeguards are in place to ensure user data remains secure.

The Bloomberg report noted that the chatbot version of Siri is not expected to arrive before iOS 27 , along with parallel updates for other Apple platforms. In the meantime, Apple is said to be preparing to roll out an upgraded version of Siri with limited AI features as early as this spring, with the release of iOS 26.4 .

The move appears notable given earlier remarks by Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, Craig Federighi , who had stated last year that the company did not plan to build a standalone or “bolt-on” chatbot, arguing that such an approach did not align with Apple’s AI strategy.

If the reported plans materialise, the new Siri could mark Apple’s most ambitious step yet into the rapidly evolving generative AI landscape.
