Sinner Storms Into Rome Semis, Breaks Djokovic’s Masters Record
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner continued his sensational run at the Italian Open by storming into the semifinals with a commanding 6-2, 6-4 victory over Russia’s Andrey Rublev in Rome. In front of a packed and emotionally charged home crowd, the Italian star not only moved two wins away from a historic title but also broke a major record previously held by Novak Djokovic .
With the win, Sinner registered his 32nd consecutive victory in Masters 1000 events , surpassing Djokovic’s record of 31 straight wins set in 2011. Yet, the 24 year old remained grounded after the milestone moment, insisting that records were never his primary motivation. “I don’t play for records. I play for my own story,” Sinner said after the match, drawing loud cheers from the crowd inside Rome’s iconic Foro Italico.
Italy has waited nearly 50 years for a homegrown men’s singles champion at the Italian Open, with Adriano Panatta being the last to achieve the feat in 1976. Now, Sinner has become the symbol of that long-awaited dream. Fans dressed in orange, his signature colour, filled the stands and turned the stadium atmosphere into a celebration of Italian tennis.
Against Rublev, Sinner displayed remarkable control and precision, repeatedly finding the lines with powerful groundstrokes. Apart from a brief late break in the second set, the Italian never looked troubled and comfortably sealed another straight-set win. His overall winning streak has now stretched to 27 matches , strengthening his position as one of the favourites for the upcoming French Open .
Sinner will next face former Rome champion Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals, while the other last four clash features Casper Ruud and Luciano Darderi . With the city rallying behind him, Sinner now stands on the edge of creating tennis history on home soil.
