In a landmark move for women’s empowerment in India’s mining sector, the Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) has initiated the deployment of women as heavy dumper operators in its open-cast coal mines for the first time in its nearly 130-year history. The decision marks a significant social and industrial shift in a sector traditionally dominated by men.

The initiative comes under the guidance of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu , who have been advocating equal opportunities for women across all professions, including physically demanding industries. Officials say the move reflects the Telangana government’s commitment to creating a more inclusive workforce and encouraging women to take up challenging technical roles.

Heavy dumpers used in Singareni’s open-cast mines are among the largest industrial vehicles in operation, with capacities ranging between 60 and 100 tonnes . These vehicles transport coal and overburden from deep mining zones under extreme working conditions, including high temperatures, heavy rains, and round-the-clock shifts. For decades, such operations were handled exclusively by male workers.

Breaking that long-standing barrier, around 35 women employees volunteered to join the programme after SCCL invited applications. The company arranged specialised training for them at the Telangana Institute of Driving Education and Skills (TIDES) in Sircilla. The training included heavy vehicle handling, safety procedures, simulator practice, and operational skills required for obtaining a Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) licence.

So far, 13 women employees have successfully completed the programme and secured HMV licences. Many trainees admitted they were initially intimidated by the size and complexity of the dumpers, but said the training helped them gain confidence to work alongside male operators in mining projects.

The development is part of a broader transformation within SCCL. Women employees are already serving in high-risk operations, including blasting sections at the Bellampalli Khairiguda Open Cast Mine , while the company has also formed its first-ever women rescue team .

Industry observers believe the induction of women dumper drivers could become a model for other mining companies, signalling that modern mining operations are increasingly being shaped by skill, training, and technology rather than traditional gender roles.
