Singapore Opposition Chief Faces Party Reprimand Over Parliamentary Lying Case
Singapore’s main opposition group, the Workers’ Party , has formally reprimanded its Secretary General Pritam Singh after findings that he lied to a parliamentary committee, following a conviction that was earlier upheld by the High Court .
The disciplinary action marks a significant moment for the party as it navigates the political and legal fallout involving its long serving leader, who has headed the party since 2018 and previously served as Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.
According to the party statement, a disciplinary panel formed in January concluded that Singh had breached two provisions of the party’s constitution. The panel’s findings came after his conviction in December 2025 on two counts related to giving false testimony before a parliamentary committee.
The matter was later reviewed by the Workers’ Party Central Executive Committee (CEC) , which includes senior leaders Sylvia Lim and Faisal Manap . Both recused themselves from the decision making process due to their involvement as witnesses in the case.
While the party acknowledged the violations, it also noted that Singh did not appear to have acted with intent to harm the party’s principles or objectives. After assessing the full circumstances, the committee issued him a formal letter of reprimand , rather than taking harsher disciplinary action.
Importantly, the party clarified that there are currently no restrictions preventing Singh from contesting future internal elections, with the next party office bearer polls expected later in 2026 .
Singh’s legal troubles have already triggered political consequences. Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong removed him from the post of Leader of the Opposition earlier in January, citing his criminal conviction and parliamentary proceedings that questioned his suitability for the role.
The ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) continues to dominate Singapore’s Parliament with 87 of 99 seats , while the Workers’ Party holds 12 seats , making it the country’s primary opposition force.
