Singapore Minister Faishal Ibrahim Resigns Over 'Lapse of Judgment' in Interactions With Woman

Singapore's Acting Minister in Charge of Muslim Affairs, Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, resigned from the Cabinet, Parliament, and the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) on Monday after an internal review concluded that his conduct during interactions with a woman fell short of the standards expected of a political office holder, despite police finding no criminal wrongdoing. The resignation was accepted by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who described the development as "sad" while reaffirming the government's commitment to high ethical standards.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), the matter surfaced about a month ago when it received an email from a woman detailing her interactions with Faishal Ibrahim. Wong immediately directed the relevant authorities to examine the allegations and determine whether the minister's conduct breached either the law or the standards expected of members of the government.

The review found that most of the interactions took place through online messages, while the two also met on the sidelines of public events. During the inquiry, both Faishal and the woman accused each other of harassment, prompting the case to be referred to the police. After investigating, the Singapore Police Force concluded that no criminal offences had been committed, and no action would be taken against either party.

However, the Prime Minister's Office said a separate question remained whether Faishal's conduct met the ethical standards required of a political office holder and Member of Parliament. Following the review, Faishal accepted that his actions had fallen short and tendered his resignation from all political appointments, including as an MP and PAP member.

In his resignation letter, released by the PMO, Faishal admitted to a "lapse of judgment" in handling the interactions. He stressed that there was no physical relationship and that he never intended for the exchanges to develop into one, but acknowledged he should have established clearer boundaries much earlier.

"I am deeply sorry to have let down my residents and supporters, who placed their trust in me," the 58-year-old politician said in a social media post after his resignation was accepted.

Prime Minister Wong thanked Faishal for his two decades of public service, highlighting his contributions to strengthening community resilience, supporting the rehabilitation of ex-offenders, improving outcomes for vulnerable families, and serving residents diligently. Wong also announced that Zaqy Mohamad, Senior Minister of State for Defence and Sustainability and the Environment, will take over as the Acting Minister in Charge of Muslim Affairs, while the remaining PAP MPs in Marine Parade Braddell Heights GRC will continue serving residents in Kembangan.

Faishal entered politics in 2006 after an academic career at the National University of Singapore and held several ministerial and parliamentary positions over the years. He most recently served as Acting Minister in Charge of Muslim Affairs and Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs.
