Singapore High Commissioner to India Simon Wong met Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay at the Secretariat here on Monday, signalling Singapore’s interest in strengthening its longstanding economic and institutional ties with the state.

Wong congratulated Vijay on assuming office and discussed ways to further deepen the relationship between Singapore and Tamil Nadu, according to officials familiar with the meeting. William Chik, Deputy Consul of the Singapore Consulate in Chennai, was also present along with several senior officials from the Singapore side.

The meeting comes against the backdrop of Singapore’s significant economic presence in Tamil Nadu and ongoing cooperation between Singapore and India in areas including advanced manufacturing, skills development, digitalisation, healthcare and connectivity. Singapore has been an important investment partner for Tamil Nadu, with the city-state having established a substantial presence across sectors. The latest diplomatic engagement could provide an avenue for the state government to seek greater investment and collaboration in emerging industries as it seeks to position Tamil Nadu as a major global manufacturing and technology hub.

The meeting also assumes significance as the Vijay government has been actively pursuing foreign investment and international partnerships since taking office. Vijay’s first overseas investment mission as chief minister, undertaken in September, resulted in commitments which the state government later valued at Rs 15,300 crore, with more than 10,000 jobs expected.

However, Monday’s meeting with the Singapore envoy was distinct from that investment mission and was held in Chennai, with no details of any new investment agreement or memorandum of understanding immediately announced. Singapore and India have also been expanding cooperation in advanced manufacturing. Earlier this year, the two countries discussed progress on the National Centre of Excellence for Advanced Manufacturing in Chennai, along with collaboration in digitalisation and skills.

The Singapore envoy’s meeting with Vijay therefore provides an early indication of the new Tamil Nadu government’s engagement with the city-state, while further details on specific investment proposals or bilateral initiatives are awaited. Officials did not immediately disclose the full agenda of the meeting or whether a Singapore visit by Vijay or a state delegation is being planned.
