
Singapore Badminton Open 2026: Sindhu Stuns World No. 6, Ayush Shetty Exits Early
India’s campaign at the Singapore Badminton Open 2026 produced mixed results on Tuesday, with a first-round exit for Ayush Shetty , a standout win for PV Sindhu , and a strong opening performance from the men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy–Chirag Shetty .
India’s Ayush Shetty suffered a tough defeat against Canada’s World Championships medallist Victor Lai , going down 11-21, 21-14, 21-12 in an hour and five minutes at the Singapore Indoor Stadium . The 20th-ranked Indian began strongly, taking the opening game, but Lai responded with aggressive mid-game control and dominated the decider to seal the match and progress to the second round.
In contrast, two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu delivered a commanding performance to defeat world No. 6 Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani 21-17, 21-18. Sindhu showed strong resilience , recovering from mid-game deficits in both games and finishing with control in the closing stages to secure a significant victory.
Another setback came in women’s singles, where Unnati Hooda lost in straight games to Japan’s Tomoka Miyazaki , 21-14, 21-10.
In men’s doubles, fourth seeds Satwiksairaj Rankireddy–Chirag Shetty overcame a stern challenge from USA pair Chen Zhi Yi–Presley Smith , winning 26-28, 21-15, 21-13. After losing a tight opening game, the Indian pair responded strongly to dominate the next two games.
India’s other men’s doubles team, MR Arjun–Hariharan Amsakarunan , went down 21-15, 21-13 against Japan’s Takuro Hoki–Yugo Kobayashi .
In women’s doubles, both Indian pairs exited early. Kavipriya Selvam–Simran Singhi lost 18-21, 21-13, 21-5 to Spain’s Paula Lopez–Lucia Rodriguez , while Ashwini Bhat K–Shikha Gautam were defeated 21-16, 21-11 by Chinese Taipei’s Chang Ching-hui–Yang Ching-Tun .
In mixed doubles, Rohan Kapoor–Ruthvika Shivani Gadde narrowly lost 21-18, 22-20 in a closely fought contest.
India’s top men’s singles players Lakshya Sen and HS Prannoy , along with Malvika Bansod , will begin their campaigns on today.
