Sindhu Draws World No. 1 An Se-young, Lakshya Sen Faces Tough Denmark Open Opener
Two-time Olympic medallist P V Sindhu faces a daunting opening-round challenge against world No. 1 An Se-young, while Lakshya Sen takes on third seed Chou Tien Chen as India's campaign at the Denmark Open Super 750 begins on Tuesday.
Sindhu, a former world champion, has lost all 10 of her previous meetings against defending champion An. The 31-year-old Indian won the Japan Open Super 750 title in July but exited last week's Arctic Open in the quarterfinals after a three-game defeat to Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon.
Lakshya will look to bounce back after an inconsistent Asian Games individual campaign. The Indian, who finished runner-up at the All England Championships earlier this year and reached the semifinals at the 2024 Paris Olympics, has also been troubled by a back injury. He faces a stern test against Chou, who defeated India's Ayush Shetty at the Asian Games.
Ayush meets Indonesia's Alwi Farhan, while Kidambi Srikanth, the 2017 Denmark Open champion, opens against France's Arnaud Merkle.
India's women's singles line-up also features Tanvi Sharma, who won the Taipei Open in August, and Ashmita Chaliha, the Korea Masters champion. Tanvi faces Japan's Natsuki Nidaira, while Ashmita takes on Bulgaria's Kaloyana Nalbantova. Devika Sihag meets Thailand's Pornpawee Chochuwong, and Unnati Hooda faces China's Han Qian Xi.
In men's doubles, fifth seeds Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will seek redemption after their Asian Games exit. The pair, who won the China Masters last month, open against China's He Ji Ting and Ren Xiang Yu.
In women's doubles, Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, World Championships bronze medallists, face Chinese Taipei's Yan Fei Chen and Hsieh Pei Shan.
