Tufail Ahmed Rind, a journalist from Sindh's Ghotki district, was tragically shot dead by unidentified assailants in Mirpur Mathelo. The attack occurred while Rind was accompanying his children to school, underscoring the brazen nature of the assault. Local police have initiated an investigation, but no arrests have been made thus far .

Rind's murder is part of a troubling pattern of violence against journalists in Pakistan, particularly in Sindh province. In May 2024, journalist Nasrullah Gadani was also killed in Ghotki district, allegedly due to his investigative reporting . The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has previously urged Pakistani authorities to thoroughly investigate such incidents and hold perpetrators accountable .

Sindh's Chief Minister, Murad Ali Shah, has expressed deep sorrow over Rind's killing, emphasizing that attacks on journalists are attacks on press freedom. He has directed the Inspector General of Police to submit a detailed report on the incident .

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by journalists in Pakistan, where a record number of journalists were killed in 2024, often with little to no accountability. Advocacy groups continue to call for stronger protections for journalists and more rigorous investigations into attacks against the press.
