Prime Minister Narendra Modi touched down in Gangtok on Monday afternoon, as the Himalayan state wraps up a year long golden jubilee marking five decades of its statehood. Dressed in a traditional Lepcha coat , Modi was received at the Libing helipad by Governor Om Prakash Mathur and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang before plunging straight into the festivities.

Enthusiastic residents lined both sides of the roads, waving the tricolour and dressed in traditional attire as the Prime Minister kicked off a vibrant roadshow . The two kilometre cultural procession stretched from Biralu Dwar to MG Marg, with Gangtok adorned in a festive wash of national flags. On the open vehicle, Modi was flanked by Chief Minister Tamang on his left and state BJP president DR Thapa on his right, with large crowds having waited for hours to catch a glimpse of the Prime Minister.

The visit carries particular significance. Modi had been expected at the opening ceremony of the year long celebrations last year but could not reach the venue due to inclement weather , and instead addressed the gathering through video conferencing from Bagdogra in neighbouring West Bengal. Monday’s arrival was therefore met with added warmth. Local entrepreneur Deewakar Basnet said the people of Sikkim were very thankful to the Prime Minister for making this visit on the occasion of the 50th statehood anniversary .

The centrepiece of the two day tour comes on Tuesday, when Modi will attend the closing ceremony at Paljor Stadium and inaugurate, launch, and lay the foundation stones of multiple development projects worth over ₹4,000 crore , spanning infrastructure, connectivity, healthcare, education, power, urban development, environment, tourism, and agriculture.

The project list is sweeping in scope. In education, he will inaugurate the permanent campus of Sikkim University at Yangang , the Helen Lepcha Medical College at Socheygang , and a new Model Degree College at Mangshila, while also launching IT enabled infrastructure across 160 schools . On connectivity, he will lay the foundation stone of two double lane steel arch bridges over the Teesta river , linking the Namchi and Gangtok districts. For tourism, he will inaugurate the redevelopment of the Ridge Precinct in Gangtok along with eco tourism and pilgrimage infrastructure.

Modi will also visit the newly developed Swarnajayanti Maitri Manjari Park , a world class Orchid Experience Centre built to showcase Sikkim's ecological and floral heritage, a living tribute to a state that has long stood as India’s green conscience.
