In a spectacular show of endurance, camaraderie, and fitness, over 2,200 runners took part in the second edition of the ‘Sikkim Soldierathon’ Hill Half Marathon here on Sunday. The event, themed ‘Great Himalayan Connect’, aimed to foster stronger ties between the Indian Army and citizens, especially the youth, while promoting sports tourism in the scenic Himalayan state.

The marathon was officially flagged off by Mizoram Governor Gen V K Singh (Retd), in the presence of Sikkim Governor Om Prakash Mathur, at the Paljor Stadium. Participants included enthusiastic civilians as well as soldiers from Sikkim Scouts, Ladakh Scouts, and Dogra Scouts.

The event featured three race categories 5 km, 10 km, and 21 km catering to runners of all levels. Winners were awarded attractive prizes, and every participant received an achievers’ medal and promotional items. The cash prizes were sponsored by Sikkim Raj Bhavan, while the marathon also showcased vibrant cultural performances that added an electrifying atmosphere to the event.

Governor Mathur hailed the marathon as an inspiring initiative that strengthens military-social coordination and civil consciousness among the state’s youth. He congratulated the organisers, army officers, participants, and partner organisations for the successful execution of the event.

Lieutenant General Ram Chander Tiwari, GOC-in-C, Eastern Command, said, “Every step you take is a tribute to the valour and sacrifice of our soldiers guarding our borders. I am honoured to be part of this vibrant initiative to promote a ‘Fit India’ and reinforce the bond between the Indian Army and citizens.”

Lieutenant General Man Raj Singh Mann, GOC, 33 Corps, added that Soldierathon is a unique opportunity for civilians to experience running alongside brave soldiers who guard the nation round the clock.

Hosted jointly by Eastern Command, Trishakti Corps, Raj Bhavan, Sikkim, and ‘Fitistan: Ek Fit Bharat’, the marathon successfully blended fitness, patriotism, and community spirit, leaving participants inspired and energised.
