Sikkim Clears ₹19,215 Crore Budget, Appropriation Bill for 2026-27

The Sikkim Assembly on Thursday unanimously passed the ₹19,215 crore state Budget for the financial year 2026-27 on the concluding day of its four-day session.

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, who also holds the Finance portfolio, had presented the annual Budget on July 20, the opening day of the session. The Budget was subsequently approved by the House after Speaker M N Sherpa put it to a vote.

The Assembly also passed the Sikkim Appropriation Bill, 2026, allowing the state government to withdraw funds from the Consolidated Fund for meeting expenditure during the financial year. Tamang also presented the Medium Term Fiscal Plan for 2026-27 to 2028-29 before the legislature.

Among the key legislative measures, the House approved the Board of Open Schooling and Vocational Education, Sikkim Bill, 2026. Introduced by Education Minister Raju Basnet, the legislation seeks to facilitate the establishment of a private open schooling board in the state, aimed at expanding alternative and vocational education opportunities.

The Assembly also passed separate demands for grants for several departments, including Roads & Bridges, Education, Sports & Youth Affairs, Law & Parliamentary Affairs, and Tourism & Civil Aviation.

The ₹19,215-crore Budget is the central financial highlight of the session, while the medium-term fiscal plan provides a broader three-year framework for the state's finances. The focus on education, roads and bridges, sports, tourism and civil aviation also underlines key sectors receiving legislative and financial attention.

With all scheduled business completed, Speaker M N Sherpa adjourned the House sine die, bringing the four-day Assembly session to a close.
