Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday defended the Congress party’s decision to field relatives of deceased legislators in the upcoming Assembly by-elections, asserting that the move aligns with established political practice rather than constituting dynastic favouritism.

The bypolls, scheduled for April 9, were necessitated following the demise of sitting MLAs from Davanagere South and Bagalkote constituencies. The Congress has nominated family members of the late leaders, a decision that has drawn criticism from the Bharatiya Janata Party. Responding to the allegations, Siddaramaiah maintained that such selections are a “common practice” adopted across parties to ensure continuity in representation.

Expressing confidence in the party’s prospects, the Chief Minister said the Congress expects a decisive victory in both constituencies. He also dismissed reports of dissatisfaction among minority communities over candidate selection, asserting that these voters have historically backed the Congress and are unlikely to shift allegiance.

On governance, Siddaramaiah strongly defended the state government’s flagship welfare initiatives, describing them as “social investments” aimed at uplifting economically weaker sections. He contrasted this approach with the BJP’s economic model, which he characterised as relying on a trickle-down framework. He also refuted criticism regarding capital expenditure, stating that allocations have increased compared to the previous fiscal year.

Addressing concerns over Karnataka’s financial health, he said the government continues to adhere to fiscal discipline norms despite revenue constraints arising from changes in GST and reduced tax devolution from the Centre.

On national political trends, Siddaramaiah projected strong performances for opposition parties in several states, while asserting that the principal contest in southern India remains between the Congress and the BJP.

Dismissing speculation of internal discord within the party, he reaffirmed that Rahul Gandhi remains the central leader of the Congress. On the issue of a possible power-sharing arrangement with Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar, he said any decision would be taken by the party’s high command, indicating that the matter remains under consideration.
