Siddaramaiah attends Satish Jarkiholi dinner as Congress leadership dynamics resurface

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah ’s participation in a dinner hosted by senior Congress minister Satish Jarkiholi , who is also a Public Works Department minister, in Belagavi on December 18 has once again drawn attention to the internal dynamics of the ruling party, though leaders insist there is no immediate political fallout.

The dinner, held at Jarkiholi ’s residence, was attended by several ministers and legislators considered close to Siddaramaiah , including G Parameshwara , H C Mahadevappa, B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan and M C Sudhakar, as well as legislators A S Ponnanna and Naseer Ahmed . Jarkiholi is widely seen as a key ally of the Chief Minister.

While party leaders have described the meeting as a casual interaction during the ongoing winter session of the legislature, the timing of the gathering has fuelled speculation, coming shortly after the Congress government completed the halfway mark of its five year term last month.

A day earlier, on December 17, Jarkiholi had hosted another dinner for over thirty “like minded” Congress legislators at a hotel in Belagavi. Siddaramaiah did not attend that meeting, but his son and MLC Yathindra Siddaramaiah , along with MLA K N Rajanna, who is considered a close confidant, were present.

Responding to questions from reporters, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar downplayed any political significance. “What’s wrong in meeting for dinner? Let them have dinner. It’s a happy thing,” he said. When asked about selective participation, Shivakumar added that leaders had gathered from different places for the legislature session and informal meetings were natural.

The dinners also come days after Shivakumar himself hosted a similar gathering for over thirty Congress legislators, including several ministers, on the outskirts of Belagavi.

While there is no indication of an immediate division or leadership change , political observers note that such meetings often serve as informal platforms for leaders to assess support and maintain internal cohesion, especially during sensitive phases of a government’s tenure. At present, the Congress leadership appears focused on preventing any public display of discord.

Speculation over a possible leadership change had intensified after the Congress government crossed the two and a half year mark on November 20, reviving discussions around the power sharing understanding between Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar reached in 2023. However, recent breakfast meetings between the two leaders, reportedly held at the direction of the party high command, were seen as an effort to pause the leadership debate and signal continuity for now.

The winter session of the Karnataka legislature, which began on December 8 in Belagavi, is scheduled to conclude on Friday.
