Telangana Director General of Police C. V. Anand on Monday credited the Special Intelligence Branch (SIB) with playing a decisive role in weakening the Maoist movement in the state, saying the agency’s sustained intelligence operations and rehabilitation-focused approach had significantly reduced Left-Wing Extremism in Telangana.

During a visit to the SIB headquarters in Hyderabad, the DGP held a detailed review meeting with senior officials on the current Maoist situation, ongoing counter-insurgency operations, and the effectiveness of the state’s intelligence network. He praised SIB personnel for their continuous efforts in tracking underground Maoist activity and encouraging cadres to surrender and rejoin mainstream society.

According to Telangana Police, a record 820 Maoists surrendered between 2024 and 2026 , including four Central Committee members and 22 State Committee members , marking a major setback for the banned CPI (Maoist) organisation. Officials said the surrendered cadres also handed over 334 sophisticated weapons , including AK-47 rifles, INSAS rifles, SLRs, and Light Machine Guns (LMGs) .

The DGP noted that the success was not achieved through force alone but through a combination of intelligence-driven policing , sustained surveillance, and confidence-building measures in tribal regions that were once considered Maoist strongholds. He said the SIB played a proactive role in persuading underground cadres to abandon violence and return to civilian life.

Telangana Police has also been focusing on the long-term rehabilitation of surrendered Maoists. Reviewing the reintegration measures, Anand directed officials to ensure that former cadres receive support through skill development programmes, employment-oriented training, and livelihood opportunities , enabling them to rebuild their lives with dignity.

With Maoist influence declining sharply after nearly four decades of insurgency, the DGP said the role of the SIB must now evolve to address emerging security challenges beyond traditional extremism. He stressed the need for stronger monitoring of social media trends, youth-related law and order concerns, cyber-linked threats, and changing societal patterns .

Anand said the intelligence wing should increasingly function as a broader strategic policing unit capable of anticipating future threats and supporting Telangana Police in maintaining internal security in a rapidly changing environment.

The review meeting was attended by Additional DGP (Intelligence) Vijay Kumar, IGP (Intelligence & SIB) Karthikeya, and other senior officials.
