Shubman Gill Should not be Judged on Two Matches, Says Nehra

It has been emphasized by Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra that Shubman Gill should not be judged hastily based on his recent performances. Concerns have been expressed over the criticism faced by Gill after scoring 181 runs in his last 10 T20I games at a strike rate below 140. It was noted by Nehra that only two matches against South Africa have been played, and premature conclusions based on these should be avoided.

It was highlighted that in fast-paced formats like T20 cricket, evaluating a player solely on short-term statistics can be misleading. Nehra stated that changes can always be made if needed, but reacting to a couple of poor performances undermines team stability and player confidence. Alternatives such as Sai Sudharsan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Washington Sundar, and Ishan Kishan have been mentioned by critics, but the coach emphasized that such comparisons are unhelpful when assessing experienced players like Gill.

The role of Washington Sundar in the team was also addressed. It was stated by Nehra that Sundar is primarily a batsman capable of batting anywhere from positions one to six, with off-spin bowling providing additional support depending on pitch conditions. It was noted that Sundar, aged 25-26, is still improving and is expected to play more regularly in the upcoming IPL season compared to last year when his opportunities were limited due to team combinations.

Ahead of the IPL mini-auction scheduled for December 16 in Abu Dhabi, it was revealed that Gujarat Titans will require only five new players, with a purse of ₹12.90 crore, the third-lowest among the ten teams. The squad was described as largely settled, with confirmed players including Jos Buttler, Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan, Rahul Tewatia, Shahrukh Khan, Rashid Khan, R Sai Kishore, Kagiso Rabada, Prasidh Krishna, and Mohammed Siraj. One remaining slot could be filled by New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips as a big-hitting all-rounder, while Washington Sundar remains the key Indian option.

It was concluded by Nehra that the core team is strong and balanced, and stability is being prioritized over reactive changes. Confidence was expressed that if players maintain form, strong performances can be expected in both the IPL and international T20 competitions.
