Shubman Gill Calls India’s 600th Test “A Very Big Honour” Ahead of Independence Day Clash

India Test captain Shubman Gill described leading the country in its landmark 600th Test match as a “very big honour and privilege” as India prepares to face Sri Lanka in the opening Test of the two-match series at the Galle International Cricket Stadium on August 15.

India will become the first Asian team and only the third side after England and Australia to complete 600 Tests. The historic occasion will also coincide with India’s Independence Day, making the match particularly significant for Gill.

“It’s a very big honour and privilege. Any Test match that you captain for your country is a huge deal. Obviously, leading my country in our 600th Test match is a big honour and privilege for me, and doing that on Independence Day is even more special for us,” Gill said at the pre-match press conference.

The 26-year-old captain said he has grown comfortable in his leadership role and was pleased with India’s progress during his first year at the helm. India currently occupy fifth place in the World Test Championship 2025-27 standings, with four wins, four defeats and a draw from nine matches.

Gill stressed that the Sri Lanka series is crucial to India’s hopes of reaching the WTC final next year. He said India may need to win around six or seven of their remaining Tests to give themselves a strong chance of qualification.

Gill also backed Devdutt Padikkal, amid questions surrounding India’s No. 3 position, saying the young batter has the skills and potential to succeed in Test cricket and needs time to establish himself.

With premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah unavailable, India will field a relatively inexperienced bowling attack. Gill said the absence creates an opportunity for other bowlers to step up, while emphasising the need for creative fields and sustained pressure, particularly on subcontinent pitches where wickets can be difficult to create.

The first Test will also be the 50th Test at Galle, a venue Gill praised for its picturesque setting, with the beach and historic fort visible from the stadium.

India’s squad includes Gill, KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna and others. Sri Lanka will be led by Dhananjaya de Silva, with key players including Kamindu Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal and Prabath Jayasuriya.
