Shreyas Iyer’s Maiden IPL Ton Powers PBKS Past LSG, Keeps Playoffs Dream Alive

Punjab Kings rediscovered their winning touch after six consecutive defeats as skipper Shreyas Iyer’s unbeaten 101 off 51 balls powered them to a commanding seven-wicket victory over Lucknow Super Giants in an IPL clash here on Saturday, keeping them firmly alive in the playoffs race.

Chasing a challenging 196 for two , Punjab Kings reached 200 for three in 18 overs , riding on a match-defining 140-run stand for the third wicket between Shreyas Iyer and Prabhsimran Singh (69 off 39 balls).

The result lifted Punjab Kings to 15 points from 14 matches , pushing them back to the fourth spot on the points table. However, their qualification remains uncertain and depends on other results, making the wait for a playoff berth tense.

Punjab’s fate now hinges on the clash between Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians in Mumbai today. If Rajasthan Royals lose, Punjab Kings will qualify for the playoffs with 15 points. If Royals win, they will progress and Punjab will be eliminated. Kolkata Knight Riders, with 13 points and still in contention, also remain in the mix depending on that result. If Rajasthan lose and KKR win their final match, a net run rate calculation could come into play between KKR and PBKS, both finishing on 15 points. Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans have already secured their places in the knockouts of the Indian Premier League .

Earlier, Punjab Kings suffered an early setback when opener Priyansh Arya fell for a first-ball duck to Mohammed Shami (2/45), while Cooper Connolly also lost his wicket cheaply as Punjab were under early pressure.

But Shreyas Iyer, leading from the front, remained unfazed. He played with authority, dominating both pace and spin with a wide range of strokes including crisp drives, powerful pulls and trademark flicks off his pads. He was particularly severe on spinner Digvesh Rathi, collecting multiple boundaries through the leg side.

Prabhsimran Singh, who was dropped twice on 20 and 62, made full use of his chances and supported his captain brilliantly. He reached his sixth fifty of the season in just 26 balls, while Shreyas brought up his half-century in 33 deliveries.

Once set, Shreyas shifted gears in explosive fashion. The next 51 runs of his innings came off just 18 balls as he took complete control of the chase. Prabhsimran eventually fell for 69, trapped lbw by Arjun Tendulkar, but by then the foundation of the chase had been firmly laid.

Shreyas continued his assault, bringing up his maiden IPL century in style with a six off Mohsin Khan, a shot that also sealed Punjab’s victory. He also hammered Mohammed Shami for three sixes in a single over, further accelerating the chase and breaking Lucknow’s resistance.

Earlier in the innings, Lucknow Super Giants posted a competitive 196 for six , thanks to Josh Inglis’ fluent 72. Inglis initially attacked Arshdeep Singh in the powerplay but later combined effectively with Ayush Badoni, who scored a quickfire 43 off 18 balls.

Badoni and Inglis added 49 runs for the third wicket, helping Lucknow recover after early setbacks. Badoni’s innings included a destructive over against Azmatullah Omarzai, where he scored 24 runs with a sequence of 4, 6, 6, 4.

Rishabh Pant (26 off 21 balls) provided brief support but could not convert his start after being dropped on 18. Inglis eventually fell for 72, caught off Shahshank Singh, while Abdul Samad remained unbeaten on 37 off 20 balls to push the total close to 200.

However, Lucknow’s momentum faded in the final overs as wickets fell at crucial stages, preventing them from crossing the 200-mark despite a strong middle-phase recovery.

In the end, Shreyas Iyer’s brilliance ensured Punjab Kings stayed alive in the IPL playoffs race , setting up a tense finish to the league stage.
