Skipper Shreyas Iyer ’s elegant yet aggressive half-century was the centrepiece in Punjab Kings’ five-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings in an IPL thriller at Chepauk on Friday.

Chasing a competitive 210 , PBKS relied on a composed and powerful batting display. Shreyas Iyer (50 off 29 balls) anchored the chase, forging a crucial 59-run partnership with Nehal Wadhera for the fourth wicket. Their effort helped PBKS finish at 210 for five , handing CSK their second consecutive defeat .

The victory was a collective effort, but Player of the Match Priyansh Arya (39 off 11 balls) set the tone with brutal hitting, including a four and six off Khaleel Ahmed and 20 runs off Matt Henry’s first over . Arya and Prabhsimran Singh (43 off 34 balls) combined for 61 runs in just 4.2 overs , signalling the aggressive intent of PBKS. Cooper Connolly (36 off 22) also made a key contribution in the middle order.

Shreyas Iyer began cautiously but accelerated after Connolly’s dismissal. He punished the spinners, with the shot of the innings being an inside-out six off Rahul Chahar . He reached his fifty in just 26 balls with a boundary off Anshul Kamboj but soon fell to a wide delivery. Wadhera followed immediately, yet PBKS maintained composure to seal the win.

Earlier, Ayush Mhatre (73 off 43 balls) starred for CSK, powering them to a challenging 209 for five . Mhatre and skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad (28) shared a 96-run second-wicket stand after Sanju Samson’s early dismissal . Mhatre’s attacking strokes, including consecutive sixes off Marcus Stoinis and a brisk fifty in 29 balls , kept CSK ahead.

Despite his brilliance, Mhatre fell to Yuzvendra Chahal at short third man after earlier drops from Vijayakumar Vyshak and Shahshank Singh . CSK’s late surge, aided by Shivam Dube (45 off 27 balls) , yielded 64 runs in the final five overs , but it was insufficient to defend the total.

The win marked PBKS’ second successive victory , highlighting the team’s depth and consistency under pressure. With contributions across the batting order, Shreyas Iyer’s leadership , and Priyansh Arya’s explosive hitting , PBKS executed a near-perfect chase on a dew-less Chepauk night , keeping CSK’s chase ambitions at bay.
